The State of Texas requires all drivers to carry a minimum level of liability insurance coverage on vehicles they own and operate. This ensures that, if you are involved in an accident you will, at the very least, be able to cover damages caused by your vehicle.
The minimum coverage required in the State of Texas is referred to as 25/50/25. What this means is that you must have coverage for $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 for total bodily injury coverage and $25,000 to cover property damage caused by your vehicle in an accident. These coverage minimums are on a per-accident basis. When you add these figures up, you arrive at a minimum coverage of at least $75,000. Anything less than these coverages is unsuitable and insufficient to meet the State’s requirements.
If you fail to carry the minimum insurance required, you face severe penalties and fines:
For a first-time offender, you’d be looking at a fine in the neighborhood of $900.
Repeat offenders may get their license suspended. Once this happens, you’ll be required to obtain Texas SR-22 insurance before the DMV will reinstate your license. Essentially, you must provide proof that you have the minimum insurance coverage as mandated by the State of Texas.
Beginning January 2009, auto insurance companies must report policy information to the State of Texas. This includes the effective date of your policy, the coverages you hold and when you cancel your insurance policy. Most police cars are now outfitted with a computer that allows the officer to determine whether a vehicle is insured and whether the insurance is current and up to minimum coverage requirements. In short, it’s another reason to get pulled over and the fine you receive will be substantially more than your typical speeding ticket.
